Last year we put together 2 play kits for our friend's kids.

    Teacher/School Kit

When the school supplies go on clearence (after the kids go back to school) we picked up red ink pens, crayons, pencils, and paper. We went to the Dollar Tree store and picked up some Teacher aids like a grading scale, room posters, and flash cards, planner, and grade book. We then went to a website that has worksheets you can print off for different grade levels. http://www.tlsbooks.com/preschoolworksheets.htm We printed the "teacher answer sheet" and a couple of "student sheets".

    Restaurant Kit

We made 2 aprons with pockets. I went on to Word and made 2 menus with clip art pictures and then printed and laminated them. We bought a pack of waiter pads, 2 trays, a dry erase board (for daily specials), play money, and some straws.

The kids loved them and the parents said that these were the only gifts that they were still playing with!!

If you had more time you could buy lap desks and binders for the teacher kit and pretend food, dishes, placemats, and napkins for the restaurant kit.

That's a great idea! I'd quite like to make a Doctor/Nurse one for my Husband's 2year old neice as she has a thing for throwing her dolls on the floor and then nursing them back to health.

Yeah, that does sound like a nice idea! Maybe you could add to it each year, so buy the ringbinders and fake food this year instead? Or make a new menu to add to the set. You could get them a tablecloth or something as well to wrap the fake food in.
